My Teaching at B.Sc., M.sc., M.Phil., and PhD. levels

UNDERGRADUATE Level

B.Sc.

I have taught Computer Science courses in several Faculties at The University of the West Indies, including Faculty of Engineering, Social Sciences and Science & Agriculture. My main teaching is in the B.Sc. and M.Sc Computer Science programs in the Faculty of Science & Agriculture. My specialization is Database Systems. In the last few years, I have taught the following courses:

  • B.Sc. Computer Science majors:

CS37E - Database Management Systems II

CS27E - Database Management Systems I

CS22A - Programming for Business Applications

CS29A - File Design and Implementation

  • M.Sc. Computer Science:

CS55A - Advanced Database Systems

  • B.Sc. Electrical and Computer Engineering:

CS35A – Database Management Systems

UWI, in keeping with international trends, is committed to moving into on-line distance education. I have developed two web-based courses (CS27E and CS35A) in WebCT, the Course Management software that the University has invested in. These courses are offered in dual mode: on-line and face-to-face. The laboratory sessions for both of these courses introduce students to Oracle DBMS, a leading Database Management System that is used for enterprise wide and e-commerce applications.

POSTGRADUATE Level

Ph.D.

  • I have supervised a Ph.D. student (T.Cummings) in the area of ELearning. He successfully completed his research on methodologies for the design and development of Web-based courses for Secondary School Students in the Caribbean:

  • I have served as examiner for the following Ph.D. theses:

Mohan, P. ‘Incorporating Business Rules in an Object Oriented System’, Ph.D. Thesis, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, 2000

Charlery, J. ‘Visualizing Atmospheric Vortical Flow using Line Integral Convolution Techniques’, Ph.D. Thesis, The University of the West Indies, CaveHill, 2001

  • I am currently supervisor for four Ph.D students. The research areas are as follows:
  • E-Learning: Learning Objects Repository for dynamic construction of web-based courses.

  • E-Learning: Peer review system for quality assurance of Learning objects

  • Distributed Databases: Replication in Distributed Database Systems

  • Graph Visualization: Graph Visualization Systems for Turing Machines and Finite-state Automata

M.Phil.

  • I have supervised an M.Phil student in the area of Information Visualization. She successfully completed the requirements for an M.Phil. Degree in Computer Science.

  • I am currently supervising an M.Phil. student who is doing research in the area of E-Learning (a costing model).

M.Sc.

I have served as coordinator for the M.Sc. in Computer Science that is offered by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. I teach one of the courses in that M.Sc., CS55A-Advanced Database Systems. I have supervised the following M.Sc. research projects:
